This tour takes you through the central valley of Kamchatka to the northern village of Esso, the center of Even culture. It is a unique chance to contact with indigenous culture of the Even people, their ancient history, and their traditional way of nomadic life, breeding reindeer herds, staying away from any signs of civilization and close to the exquisite nature. We drive up to Esso, spend some time there, explore the museum and watch a dance performance by natives, then take a helicopter flight out to the herds to be acquainted with the herders closer. The season for this tour extends from June to late September.
Departures: June 20, July 11, August 29, September 12
Day 1. Arrive in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Rest and unwind from travel. Dinner with a nomad family which belongs to indigenous people of Kamchatka, first acquaintance with the cultural traditions and habit of the Even, Itelmen or Koryak people. Accommodation in a hotel.
Day 2. A sightseeing city tour with visiting historical monuments, the Museum of Local Lore and the central market. Free time in the afternoon. Those who wish may check out the nightlife in Petropavlovsk.
Day 3. Drive to Milkovo village (320 km). A visit to the museum of local Lore and a taxidermist house. Overnight in a local hotel.
Day 4. Drive to Esso village (200 km), the cultural center of one of the four indigenous people of Kamchatka. Stay over in private flats or in a hotel.
Day 5. After breakfast in the morning we drive to the helicopter site for half an hour flight to the nomadic camp of the Even reindeer herders. The views en route over tundra are superb. Try to experience as much as is possible of this fascinating culture of the people shepherding the reindeer herds all year round and feel the spirit of their traditional life harmonic with the nature. Return to Esso. Stay over in private flats or in a hotel.
Note: the flight time depends on the progress the herd has made through the valley. This is a weather dependant excursion and a permission has to be obtained from Petropavlovsk.
Day 6. We spend another day in Esso. Visit the museum and learn about the history and culture of the Evens. Walk next store to the art gallery with handicrafts. In the afternoon you will be invited to the ethnographic complex “Menedek”, located 28 km from Esso settlement on the bank of the mountain river “Anavgai”. There you will have a chance to participate in a traditional ceremony, to learn about Even traditions and culture, to sit inside the national dwelling (Yurta) and try traditional dishes. You will also watch a traditional dance performance. Return to Esso. Bathe in a geothermal pool located in center of town. Stay over in private flats or in a hotel.
Day 7. Return to Petropavlovsk for the night (520 km). A farewell party at a city restaurant. Accommodation in a hotel.
Day 8. Drive to the airport for your departure home.
