#215 Dog sledding in central Kamchatka

LaikaWe invite you to participate in our trip, during which you will have a unique opportunity to visit Esso settlement, the center of Even culture, learn how to ride dog sleds and feel yourself a real aboriginal. This is the best way to experience the beauty of untouched land, feel fresh and frosty air and get closer to nature. The dog team will rush you along the pristine landscapes of central Kamchatka to reindeer herders, where you will be able to contact with indigenous culture of the Even people, their ancient history, and traditional way of nomadic life, staying away from any signs of civilization and close to the exquisite nature. As a guest you will enjoy the expert help of our professional dogsledding guides who will take care of you in every possible way and lead each trip, teaching you to harness your dogs and steer the sled. They will give you tips on staying warm and comfortable in this winter climate. Each of the hardworking sled dogs in your team has a unique personality you won't be able to resist.

Departures: February 03rd – February 14th
March 09th – March 20th   

Dog SleddingDay 1. Arrival to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Meet & transfer from the airport to the hotel. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 2. Drive to Esso village with stop for lunch in Milkovo. Welcome dinner. Evening folk concert of the Even dance group.

Day 3. Start of dog-sledding via a pass to a hunting log-cabin. We drive a dog-sledge for 3 hours, then have a tea-time with a snack to continue another 3-hour further way to the cabin. Snowmobile support is provided throughout the tour.

Day 4. Dog-sledding to the traditional household of the Koryak fisherman (40 km, 7 hours in total). Here we have a base camp for the next 3 nights. Around the camp you may see the traditional summer dwellings such as chum and balagans. Banya is available on request.

Day 5. Radial trip to look for wild horse-herd (20 km, 6-7 hrs in total). Return to the base camp.

Day 6. Radial trip to the unfrozen Belogolovaya river. If we are lucky we will be able to observe swans swimming in the Belogolovaya river. The terrain is surrounded by hills and mountain passes. Total time en route is 6 hrs (28 km).

Day 7. We say good-bye to our Koryak host and drive for a full day dog-sledding trip to reindeer breeders camp (50 km in total). We ride to a plateau via Dimchikansky pass. Overnight in a yurt (big tent) heated by wood. An Even family lives and takes care about reindeer there.

Dog SleddingDay 8. We spend a day in reindeer breeders camp and visit the herd which nomads on the higher terrain. On request the locals may kill a reindeer to have a dinner with fresh meat on local recipe

Day 9. Dog sledding back to Esso (40 km ride). Overnight in private hotel.

Day 10. Reserve day in Esso village in case of bad weather. Visit the local Lore museum, art gallery and shop for souvenirs. Bathe in the thermal pool located in the center of the town.

Day 11. Drive back to PK (520 km).

Day 12. Transfer to the airport and departure.

NOTE: the whole route may vary due to the weather conditions.

Included: double accommodation, visa invitation and registration, transfers per program, including bus for city transfers, truck for Esso, dog sledges, snowmobiles to carry personnel, food and luggage, camp equipment, satellite phone, double accommodation in Avacha hotel, accommodation in private hotel in Esso, accommodation in Koryak house, full board en route, bed & breakfast in the city, interpreter, cook, guide, musher services, admission fee to the museum in Esso, folk concert in Esso, visit to reindeer herds, permissions, visa registration.  

Excluded: airplane tickets, alcohol, insurance, sleeping bags, reindeer meat (available for extra charge).

Minimum group size is 4 persons, maximum – 8 persons.
